What Multi-Vitamin/Mineral to Choose
by Adam Librot
Choosing which vitamin and mineral
supplement is good for you is a complicated task. There are so
many companies and formulas.
For athletes and people who work out hard 4
or more times a week, and who do not take any other form of
vitamin and mineral supplementation, the best I have found is Twinlab
Mega 6 Caps. This is available in health food stores, yet you
can mail order it at a large discount of nearly 40%. Simply go to Sports Nutrition
at http://www.shadow.net/~fitness/main_pricing.html#TWIN
LABS. Scroll down to Mega 6. To
order simply call (800) 558 5543. The cost of this product is 60
cents a day.
This supplement, as the name suggests, has
a dose of 6 caps a day (2 taken 3 times a day). Some people freak
out when they hear this, cause we are used to the poor quality
supermarket supplements such as Centrum. The simple fact is that you
cannot fit all that you need in one day in one capsule!! The
way these companies make "one-a-day" supplements is by
taking out necessary ingredients.
First, there are token amount of calcium
and magnesium. Many people take 2-3 separate pills a day just for
this. With Mega 6 Caps, this is no longer necessary.
In addition, Centrum claims to have the
complete antioxidant group (Vit A (beta carotene), C, E, and
selenium). While it is true that it "contains" all the
antioxidants, it does not contain them in anywhere sufficient
quantity to act as antioxidants.
Furthermore, these supplements reduce the
amount of biotin, a necessary B vitamin, because it tends to be
more expensive. They give you 10% of the RDA, which is a token
amount.
Also, for sedentary people, the RDA is
fine, but the more you workout, the more B vitamins you need.
While supermarket brands do not take this into account, Mega 6
Caps does.
Also, supermarket brands and
"one-a-days" only includes token amounts of all the
trace minerals. Most of theses and other minerals are provided in
forms which are absorbed horribly. None of these problems are
present in a good supplement such as Mega 6 Caps.
Though this is a good supplement, it
may not be right for you activity level. If you have more
questions, or want a recommendation, email a basic description of
what your activity levels is, what whole foods you eat, and what
supplements you presently take: alibrot@aol.com
